• Los Angeles Convention Center Launches Strawless Campaign and Water Saving Initiatives

The Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) announced its straw ban during a sustainability presentation at the National League of Cities (NLC) City Summit on November 9, 2018.

The United States uses over 500 million plastic straws every day; most of which find their way into our oceans, polluting the water and ultimately killing marine life. The LACC, in partnership with in-house caterer Taste of LA by Levy Restaurants, has promised to cease the use of 250,000 straws annually to limit the detrimental and unnecessary impacts of straws on our oceans. Paper straws will be used only for blended coffee beverages until other solutions are accessible. Paper straws will also be available for those with ADA requirements.

LACC is renowned internationally as a prime site for conventions, trade shows, and exhibitions. Owned by the City of Los Angeles and professionally managed by AEG Facilities, the LACC attracts over 2.5 million visitors annually, creating potential for this initiative to make a positive, lasting and widespread impact on the future of the environment.

“One of the best ways to reduce our carbon footprint is by removing waste wherever possible,” said Matthew Brown, general manager of Taste of LA by Levy at the LACC. “Our goal has been to function 100 percent straw-free. One year ago, we eliminated straws from catering, which serves as 80 percent of our business; removing straws from our cafes and kiosks was the last piece of the puzzle.”

In August the facility also upgraded to water and energy efficient dishwashers, saving an estimated 1.3 million gallons of water annually. Last month the LACC started a project replacing 330 faucets in guest restrooms; 0.5 gallon per minute (GPM) faucets are being upgraded to 0.35 GPM units, which will save approximately 415,000 gallons of water annually.

“Environmental sustainability is embedded in the LACC’s culture and permeates every aspect of our day-to-day operations,” said Ellen Schwartz, general manager of the LACC. “It is exciting to continually launch new initiatives at events like NLC City Summit that impact communities all over the country.”

A team of hospitality students from Kansas State University in Kansas won PCMA’s inaugural Business Events Industry Student Challenge for proposing how to protect personal data of people attending business events.

Members of the winning team included Brooks Hetle, Bailey Brown, Andie Contreras, Tia Gamble and Cameryn Rasmussen. The students were advised by Kristin Malek, an assistant professor of hospitality management. The team competed against nearly two dozen collegiate teams from across the United States.

 

The Graduate Hotel Minneapolis’ partnership with Topgolf took off this October with the opening of its Swing Suite, the third Topgolf partnership with the Graduate Hotels brand since implementing the Swing Suite in the Graduate Lincoln and the Graduate Iowa City.

 

Event attendees at the George R. Brown Convention Center (GRB) will now be able to enjoy coffee from the first robotic, connected coffee service in Houston—the Coffee Haus, located across from the Marriott Marquis Houston’s skywalk. Houston First, which owns and operates the GRB, and its hospitality team powered by Levy, Houston Inspired Catering, have partnered with Austin-based Briggo to implement this service.
