Walter Bond’s latest book, “Swim! How a Shark, a Suckerfish, and a Parasite Teach You Leadership,” Mentoring, and Next Level Success has landed itself on two top seller lists this year. Ranking No. 15 in the month of October and No. 7 in November as one of the best business books, “Swim!” is a must-read for anyone looking to achieve greatness in the corporate world.

Following Bond’s NBA retirement, a former college coach recommended that Bond consider becoming a motivational speaker. After some time as a broadcaster for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Bond was ready to shift his career in a different direction; it was then that Walter Bond Seminars was born. Bond’s mission as a business coach is to teach the fundamentals of business, inspire leaders to become better mentors and transform people and companies.

Bond’s athletic background has equipped him with skills transferable to his current role as a global business coach and leader. “Everything that happened in my journey in the NBA is directly related to my business journey,” says Bond. “All the years of training, set-backs, injuries and working on a team made for a smooth transition from sports to business.”

“Swim!” is a parable that illustrates the lessons of his successful business model, “the mind-set of a shark.” Using sharks, suckerfish and parasites as metaphors relatable to the business industry, Bond has developed six activities to help readers and clients become sharks in their industry. “Sharks are constantly moving; they only look up—never down, sharks are made of cartilage, so they’re flexible; curious and they work in tandem with suckerfish to avoid parasites,” explains Bond, who believes that to be successful and to excel in your industry then you must think similarly. CEOs and their employees need to work in tandem and take care of each other to achieve all around excellence.

In his time as a basketball player, Bond had been cut and bounced around from team to team and never felt like he had the opportunity to excel in the NBA. Determined to excel in something, Bond became a shark of his own industry and was inducted into the Speaker Hall of Fame in 2015. For the first time in his life, Bond felt like he was being recognized as one of the best in the world. “It was a prestigious honor that I value and respect,” he says.

Understanding the culture and environment of the corporate world is like trying to understand the innerworkings of the ocean—a mystery. Bond hopes that through his business coaching and the lessons in “Swim!” that he can help people in all levels of business clear up some of that mystery. “Like a shark bite, [I] want to leave my mark,” says Bond.
