LACC Breaks Record for Waste Diversion

The Los Angeles Convention Center has partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council and Informa Exhibitions for a record-shattering 90.3 percent waste diversion rate at the 2016 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo.

“Los Angeles is leading the way in sustainability,” says Kate Hurst, vice president of community advancement, conference and events. “It was ranked as the fourth major city in the United States for LEED-certified projects in 2016 and is part of the 100 million square feet club, which made it an ideal location to host the 15th annual Greenbuild.”

Event Snapshots: San Diego FUNdraiser

Image:

In October, the MPI San Diego Chapter gathered in San Diego’s sparkling new venue The Point in Mission Bay for what they called a FUNdraiser. A good time was had by all, thanks to the wellmixed cocktails and delicious bites. The best part was the satisfaction in raising thousands of dollars for the Veterans Employment Committee of San Diego County. The organization is dedicated to serving disadvantaged veterans and transitioning military members of all branches of service by working to remove barriers that could stand in the way of life-sustaining employment.

Dive Into Lake Tahoe for New Venues & Old Favorites

Image:

To those who've only seen it on a map, Lake Tahoe is an intriguing blob straddling the California/Nevada state line. Insiders know, however, that “Big Blue”—America’s largest alpine lake at 22 miles long and 12 miles wide—is a place of multiple moods and faces. Yes, the Nevada side has gambling. But regular visitors orient themselves instead in terms of North Shore (accessed by Interstate 80) and South Shore (on the Highway 50 corridor).

Obicà Brings Italy to the Sunset Strip

There are hundreds of bars in Los Angeles. Dive bars. Rooftop bars. Wine bars. Hotel bars. Cocktail bars. There are even mozzarella bars. The newest is Obicà West Hollywood, the latest outpost—and the third in LA—of the worldwide collection of cheese-eateries. Like its sisters restaurants in Santa Monica and Century City, this Sunset Strip location receives twice-weekly deliveries of Mozzarella di Bufala from old-world cheese makers in Campania, Italy.

Escape Alcatraz in Thrilling Fashion

It takes a lot to entertain sophisticated travelers these days, but leave it to San Francisco to translate some intriguing tidbits of history into an out-of-the-box, underground attraction that meeting planners may want to include in their off-site activity suggestions. Escape Alcatraz is a drop ride and show simulating an escape from the infamous prison, including a (safe) jump off “The Rock.”

Splacer Debuts In Los Angeles

Splacer, an online marketplace for event spaces, has expanded to the Los Angeles market. At its debut, the market had 140 listings available to book for meetings and events, including villas, lofts, museums, theaters and more.

Signature Drink: Mr. Plant

Image:

The Mr. Plant cocktail is named for Robert Plant, legendary vocalist and lyricist of Led Zeppelin. He is one of many rock legends, including The Doors, The Who and The Rolling Stones, who used to stay at the hotel that was known as Riot House back in the day. Reports have it that Plant shouted “I am a golden god!” from a hotel balcony overlooking the Sunset Strip, inspiring the well-known scene from the movie Almost Famous. Mr. Plant has been a house favorite at the hotel since. After changing hands several times, it became Andaz West Hollywood in 2009.

For event planner Cheryl Cecchetto, president and owner of Sequoia Productions, this was her 19th Emmy Awards Governors Ball.
