San Diego rocks! And, beginning on Feb. 3, 2023, the coastal city will rock more than ever before. That’s when THE SOUND, a new state-of-the-art concert venue, will make its debut with an opening performance by 8-time Grammy winner Ziggy Marley. Located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, and operated by Solana Beach-based Belly Up Entertainment, THE SOUND adds an exciting mid-sized venue to San Diego’s performance scene and for private events.
Built inside the mission-styled Surfside Center on the Fairgrounds’ east side, The Sound’s modern, intimate ambiance exudes a seaside vibe, and integrates modern design into the Center’s historic architecture. With 7,500 square feet on the main floor and 2,000 square feet on the upper level, the $17 million venue has a capacity of 1,900 for general admission concerts, including 200 reserved seats upstairs and 100 downstairs. The capacity for an all-seated performance is 800. The space includes five bars, and will offer light food items, in addition to cocktails, beer and wine.
The Del Mar Fairgrounds has various other venues that are available for private events, including the Bing Crosby Hall (capacity, 3,500), Mission Tower (capacity, 1,400), and the Equus Tower (capacity, 250) on the sixth floor of the Del Mar Racetrack Grandstand. With more than 200,000 square feet of space across five buildings, the multiuse facilities can host groups of all sizes.
