Presidio Tunnel Tops opens on July 17, and if you’re planning an event in the Bay Area, you’ll want to know about the offerings of this new national park destination, which include spaces that can be rented for events.
Tunnel Tops is a 14-acre oasis in the center of the Presidio, the former army base that’s now a 1,500-acre national park overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. Designed to be a welcoming space both to locals and visitors from around the world, Tunnel Tops extends the Presidio’s mission of bringing national park experiences to urban communities.
Designed by the same team behind NYC’s High Line, the Presidio Tunnel Tops was, as the name suggests, built atop the Presidio Parkways Tunnels, with trails, gardens, places to gather and picnic, and amazing views of the Golden Gate. Easily accessible by public transportation, Presidio Tunnel Tops is open daily, year-round, with no tickets or reservations needed. Highlights of the new space include Campfire Circle, with a central gas firepit and seating for 75; the Cliff Walk, which follows the winding edge of the bluff and offers three overlooks with different vantage points and themes; Picnic Place, featuring long community tables under a shaded grove of trees; Golden Gate Meadow, a gathering area just south of the Cliff Walk; the Outpost, a two-acre play area, and the Courtyard gathering space.
Visitors can easily explore the park on their own or with fellow meeting attendees. They’ll discover outdoor art installations; Presidio Pop Up, featuring food trucks and carts; free campfire talks by National Park Services Rangers, and much more.
Two outdoor spaces are available for private events. East Meadow, adjacent to the Presidio Steps, Cliff Walk and Picnic Place, surrounded by tall grass and gardens and offering stunning views, can accommodate up to 500 guests. Western Garden Meadow, located at the northern edge of the Main Parade Lawn next to Presidio Plaza and adjacent to the Campfire Circle, can accommodate up to 250 guests.
