San Francisco’s Presidio Tunnel Tops Expands With Outpost Meadow

Designed due to high demand, the new picnic and gathering area will open in 2025

One year after opening, the Presidio Tunnel Tops in San Francisco boasts some impressive stats, hosting 1.8 million visits in its first year and welcoming 100 community-based organizations. To better accommodate their many visitors, a new gathering space is set to open at the end of 2025: the Outpost Meadow.

Just yards away from the Outpost playground, the new space will have many amenities. Featuring picnic tables, large picnic banquettes, and a combined seating capacity of 240, there’s plenty of space to host large gatherings—especially when over half the tables are reservable on their website. There will also be 75 bike racks, barbecue grills, a lawn to sit and play on, and expanded food trucks in that area. “This is all in response to what we heard visitors wanted,” Lisa Petrie says, the senior public relations manager at Presidio Trust. Even with all these modern expansions, the Presidio Tunnel Tops continues to provide a serene nature experience for business and leisure guests alike.

While immersed in the lush greenery and fresh air, teams can embrace San Francisco from a new point of view. Trees and shrubs will block the wind and noise from both sides of the Meadow, providing guests with a great escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Scenic views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge make for some impressive backdrops, perfect for breathtaking group photo ops post-meeting. But the outdoor oasis is good for more than social-media-worthy photos.

Amid a climate crisis across the state, Outdoor Meadow will provide California with critical environmental benefits. Over the past two decades, park managers have converted 180 acres of asphalt to permeable surfaces, and the same is being done for the new picnic spot. Replacing asphalt with coastal habitat, the new surface will better absorb water to better reduce flooding during rain and winter storms. This simple swap will improve San Francisco’s water quality and reduce stress on the city’s drainage systems—now that’s something to not only embrace but also to celebrate as the Presidio Tunnel Tops continues to accommodate meetings, events, and an changing ecosystem.
