Paradise Point Hotel Awarded 2015 Recycling Award

By M+E Staff

Destination Hotel, Paradise Point on Mission Bay was honored with the 2015 Director’s Recycling Award from the City of San Diego. They were recognized once again for their efforts in recycling and sustainability practices to reduce waste and conserve water.

The eco-friendly hotel sits on a 44-acre tropical island on San Diego’s Mission Bay. Paradise Point is committed to preserving its natural environment from lush lagoons to garden greenery. New initiatives included converting 10,000 landscaping sprinklers to low flow heads, replacing 175,000 square feet of turf with drought-tolerant plants, bringing in commercial dishwashers and laundry washers with pulse jet technologies, and upcycling glass and lumber projects.

“As an eco-friendly hotel with sustainability always top of mind, many of our water-saving initiatives were in place prior to the currently mandated water restrictions resulting from the drought,” said David Hall, managing director of Paradise Point. “Since then, Paradise Point has been focused on our ultimate goal of reducing water usage by 87 million gallons, or 35%, year over year.”

Prior to their new 2015 initiatives, Paradise Point has implemented other recycling practices such as using refillable dispensers for guest amenities to cut down on individual packaging, shifting landfill waste to recycling and composting programs, employing LED lighting, water irrigation systems, paperless purchase orders, and utilizing “Green Seal Certified” cleaning products.

The green projects taking place at Paradise Point are part of a nation-wide eco initiative by Destination Hotels called Destination Earth. The sustainability program has gained Paradise Point an official partnership from the Surfrider Foundation, an organization aiming to protect oceans, beaches and waterways.

Paradise Point looks forward to continuing their sustainable efforts after receiving acknowledgment from the city of San Diego.
