CES: The First Major Trade Show of 2022 Takes Place in Person

According to Variety, the “buzziest” product of CES 2022 was Samsung’s Freestyle, a portable projector screen and smart speaker in one that weighs in at a compact 1.8 pounds. Just as buzz-worthy was the fact that the annual show once again took place in person, after last year’s virtual gathering. The world’s largest consumer electronics show was smaller than usual, drawing some 40,000 attendees to Las Vegas, according to the Consumer Technology Association, the event’s organizer. That’s a fraction of the 180,000 people who attended the last in-person CES held in January 2020. Still, U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow found a lot worth celebrating.

“By staging an influential live event that safely convenes thousands of global professionals across the technology, business and political spectrum, CES is nothing short of a model for how business trade events can and should take place in 2022,” Dow said in a statement. “It is our sincere hope that other professional event organizers will follow their lead this year.

“Gary Shapiro and his team at CTA are to be commended for navigating today’s challenges while ensuring that attendees can build meaningful relationships and plan for the future of technology. And the health and safety protocols in place at the Las Vegas Convention Center and throughout the hotel and hospitality community has further enabled the safe return of this and other major events.

“The success of this year’s CES will contribute to the recovery of business travel in general and related industries. But of critical importance, it is producing jobs for American workers who are dependent on the safe return of all sectors of travel, which accounted for 1 in 10 U.S. jobs pre-pandemic.”
