The Colorado Tourism Office (CTO), a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), has selected the final participants for its new Accessible Travel Program, a pioneering initiative that advances accessible tourism in destinations across Colorado. This pilot program—in partnership with Wheel the World of San Francisco, California—aims to enhance accessibility in key tourist destinations, ensuring Colorado continues to be a welcoming and inclusive place for all travelers.

“As a state, Colorado is committed to ensuring all visitors—regardless of their physical abilities—can experience the beauty and adventure our state has to offer,” says Colorado Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera in a prepared statement. “The Accessible Travel Program is a critical step in making our tourism industry more inclusive, and I’m proud to see our communities working together to create a more welcoming environment for everyone.”

Through the Accessible Travel Program, selected destinations receive on-site accessibility assessments, specialized training for hospitality professionals, and marketing support to promote verified accessible sites on Wheel the World’s platform. “This program showcases Colorado’s commitment to ensuring tourism is accessible to everyone, regardless of physical ability,” says Timothy Wolfe, director of the CTO. “This pilot initiative represents a significant step in making Colorado a leader in accessible tourism, empowering both visitors and local communities.”

Beaver Creek Resort Co., Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce, and Pueblo Chamber of Commerce have been selected to participate in the Accessibility Travel Program and receive a variety of resources, including:

  • On-site accessibility assessments for up to 23 accommodations and attractions
  • Marketing support to list verified accessible sites on Wheel the World’s platform
  • Free online training for hospitality professionals on accessible travel best practices
  • A final summary report with recommendations for continued accessibility efforts

The CTO and Wheel the World will work closely with each selected destination to ensure successful implementation of the Accessibility Travel Program and foster ongoing accessibility efforts.

The CTO launched the Accessibility Travel Program in alignment with the groundbreaking Colorado Destination Stewardship Strategic Plan, a 10-year plan that aims to enhance responsible and inclusive tourism across the state; it resulted from a yearlong planning initiative engaging over 1,000 stakeholders across Colorado. Last April, Visit Colorado Springs was the first destination in the state to receive Wheel the World’s official Destination Verified Seal. By fostering accessible travel, the CTO is advancing Colorado’s commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive destination for all visitors.
