Avalon Theatre Reopened in GJ

By Beth Buehler

Historic theatres and opera house are absolutely worth saving and restoring. After working in downtown revitalization for many years in Colorado and Iowa, it became very clear that when a town had the ability to construct a distinct and well-built theatre or opera house in the late 1800s or early 1900s and continues to make sure it is a key local venue, there is a strong downtown and community that captures my interest.

Grand Junction is a good example. The historic Avalon Theatre recently celebrated the completion of an impressive $9.65 million renovation in September. Highlights include going from 900 to 1,090 seats, major acoustic and digital audio-visual improvements, and the addition of a rooftop terrace and Encore Hall, a smaller space for meetings and other gatherings that can be reserved without tying up the large performance area.

Grand Junction Visitor & Convention Bureau manages both Avalon Theatre and Two Rivers Convention Center, which can effectively be utilized together or separately by groups when meeting downtown. It’s nice to stroll between the two and see the amazing sculpture collection and stop at the great array of locally owned, one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants along the way.

Congratulations to Grand Junction!
