United Airlines is growing an already large presence at Denver International Airport (DEN), the world’s third busiest airport based on passenger traffic. On May 23, the company announced the addition of 35 flights, six new routes, a dozen new gates, and three United Clubs. United also is expanding its presence in Denver by doubling the number of early morning departures and late evening arrivals in and out of Denver, providing business and leisure travelers with more time locally or in their outbound destination.
In tandem with the news, United CEO Scott Kirby and Chief Customer Officer Linda Jojo hosted elected officials, local partners, and customers at DEN on May 23. The event included a tour of United’s soon-to-open club spaces and a look inside a brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft, one of the planes that will fly Denver routes. It is one of about 700 new planes United is adding to its fleet over a 10-year period.
New Gates, Clubs & More
United is expanding its presence in Denver with concourse expansion, adding 20 new gates across the A and B concourses last year. The carrier will open 12 more gates by the middle of 2024, bringing United to 90 gates at DEN, the most of any airline. Upgrades also are part of the investment, with more than $40 million being invested in modern furniture with in-seat power, new digital signage, self-service kiosks, and more.
Those flying through DEN regularly have likely noticed major construction underway at United Clubs. This summer, United is opening a new club on the A Concourse and reopening the first of two revamped clubs on the B Concourse. United Club locations on the B Concourse will be the largest ever built by the company. In total, the airport will have about 100,000 square feet of United Club space featuring a two-story, Colorado-inspired design and helpful features such as self-scan entry gates, Agent on Demand kiosks, and free high-speed Wi-Fi.
The growth is part of the airline’s nearly $1 billion investment in Denver, which includes increasing gate capacity by 30%, the renovated and expanded United Club locations, a new check-in lobby, user-friendly technology at gates, and a grab-and-go club concept called United Club Fly.
Increased Flight Offerings
United is expanding its presence in Denver, by offering more capacity from DEN than ever before, with over 60,000 departing seats per day. In total, the carrier will operate 35 new flights out of DEN in 2023 and has added over 90 daily mainline departures since 2018.
This summer, United will fly nonstop to more than 150 destinations from DEN, with over 450 daily departures. New nonstop flights include Dayton, Ohio; Greensboro, North Carolina; Lexington, Kentucky; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, United’s new morning flight includes destinations such as Dallas/Fort Worth, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, and Seattle.
United also operates hubs in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. The company is the largest private employer in the city of Denver with nearly 10,000 employees based locally, a number that is expected to keep growing.
