Richmond Region Tourism Appoints Sports Development Manager

John Collins Poma has been appointed to the role of sports development manager at Richmond Region Tourism. Poma will primarily work on attracting more sports-related events to the Richmond area.

“John Collins has a unique combination of hospitality industry experience and experience in the sports world that will serve him well in the role of sports development manager,” says Kristin McGrath vice president of sales and services, Richmond Region Tourism.

Visit Plano Appointed New SMERF and Government Sales Manager

Visit Plano has appointed Shane Sorenson as the new SMERF (social, military, education, religious, and fraternal) and government sales manager. Sorenson is replacing Kay Summerville, who has retired after nine years at Visit Plano.

Sorenson has experience working for the Wichita Falls CVB, and has recently earned the Texas Destination Marketer credential. He’s also a Certified Tourism Ambassador, member of TACVB, TTIA, and Event Service Professionals Association.

Annual Rose Award Winners Announced

Recently, the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau hosted their 22nd Annual Recognition of Service Excellence Awards at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Nominations are provided by clients, guests, supervisors, and the public; the awards recognize outstanding customer service. This award ceremony has six categories, a special Overall Service Champion category.

New Hire for Visit Dana Point

Sean Keliiholokai has been hired as the executive director for Visit Dana Point. In his role, he will be responsible for growing the local tourism industry with improevments on visitor attraction and retention, lodging offerings, and meetings and groups iniatiavies.

Keliiholokai, who started his position last month, formerly was the director of sales and marketing for the Greater Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau in California. Keliiholokai also spent time at the Hyatt Regency Orange Count, Marriott International and Disneyland Resort.

The Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau (announced that several staff members have received new certifications and also made a new hire.

Visit Philadelphia Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Visit Philadelphia, which began as a three-year experiment to increase tourism to the area, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. During the two decades of its existence, the CVB has  succeeded in drawing large numbers of people to the area, with 41 million people visiting in 2015—a 54 percent increase from 1997.

Visit Anaheim Adds to Sales Team

Visit Anaheim, recently hired Loretta Gon, Julie Kispal Rice and Debbie Megna for their sales team.  

With 12 years of hospitality sales experience, Gon, will serve as the new convention sales director for the central region. Gon is a certified meeting professional, has been awarded the Circle of Excellence. Most recently, she was the senior sales manager at the Hilton Anaheim.

John Groh Awarded 2016 Certified Destination Management Executive Designation

On Aug. 3 2016, the Certified Destination Management Executive designation was awarded to John Groh, the president of the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau in Illinois. Groh received his CDME recognition at the Destination Marketing Association International 2016 Annual Convention in Minneapolis. As well, Groh was elected to the Destination & Travel Foundation Board of Directors Executive Committee for one year. This committee pushes industry leaders and experts, in their respective fields, to find new strategies in the wake of a growing business environment.
