Overland Park Convention Center Has Certified Meeting Planners On Staff

Six Overland Park Convention Center staff members in Kansas have become Certified Meeting Planners.

“This is a monumental achievement for any individual in our industry,” says Brett C. Mitchell, general manager of the Overland Park Convention Center. “With approximately 140,000 sq. ft. of space, our building is a lot smaller than most big convention centers and with that comes a smaller staff, however we are fortunate enough to have added yet another talented and dedicated CMP to our team.”

Environmentally Friendly Hotel Opens in Ohio

The Hotel Oberlin in Ohio, is leading the way in the hotel industry for creating environmentally sustainable hotels.

The standout hotel is the only one in the US to use solar, geothermal and radiant heating and cooling systems. It’s also one of only five hotels in the U.S. specifically designed for the LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council. Developed by SMART Hotels, the hotel is managed by The Olympia Companies and owned by Oberlin College.

SommCon Returns to San Diego This Fall

SommCon, an education and training conference for beverage professionals and enthusiasts, will return this year Nov. 16=19 at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina. This year, more than 40 sessions will be offered through keynote sessions and educational classes. These include The Nightmare Scenario, Dealing With a Difficult Guest, Digging Into Unique Terroir, Hungarian Furmint: Ancient Grape, Modern Wines, Blind Taste With the Masters and many more. On Wednesday, Nov. 16, certification opportunities will be offered to those interested; the main conference is held Nov. 17=18.

Florida Chapters Select MPI to Manage Conference

For the next two years, Meeting Professionals International will provide meeting management services for the Southeast Education Conference. MPI is responsible for managing and developing the overall program for the 2017 and 2018 conference, which is hosted by SEC's four Florida chapters – Tampa Bay Area, Greater Orlando, North Florida and South Florida – known as TONS.

Teachers Head to Atlantic City

Today and tomorrow, the Atlantic City Convention Center is welcoming more than 45,000 teachers and educational professionals for the 2015 New Jersey Education Association Convention.

The association hosts this event yearly for members to network with fellow industry professionals and further themselves in their education-based knowledge through more than 300 seminars, workshops and programs.

Philly Hotels Witnessed Hotel Records in June

A packed summer convention calendar likely resulted in a huge boon for Center City hotels, which saw record hotel occupancy in June.

Overall occupancy peaked at 89.4 percent—the highest monthly occupancy on record. The average daily rate also broke a record, witnessing $212.95, the highest since October 2014. The Government Finance Officers Association, the Biotechnology Industrial Organization convention and the International Society for Technology in Education convention helped grow midweek occupancy.
