Signature Drink: Kalahari West African Ginger Mojito

Not everyone can take two weeks off for a trip to Africa, but if you’re feeling like you need a change of pace without the long trip, visit Kalahari Resort in the Pocono Mountains. This resort has America’s largest indoor water park in addition to one of the state’s top three largest convention centers, as well as a full-service hotel, spa and multitude of restaurants ranging from a buffet and coffee shop to upscale comfort food. The spirit of Africa is everywhere—from the décor down to every last detail, so it’s no wonder they offer an African spin on this Cuban cocktail.

A simple yet complex and delicious bourbon drink, Spice Market Old-Fashioned is one of JW Marriott’s Cocktails with Purpose creations—found on the Lobby Lounge menu at JW Marriott Minneapolis Mall of America. The beverage program, created in collaboration with New York-based Tippling Bros. and with the guidance of nutritionist Keri Glassman, emphasizes well-being and sustainability in its “garden to glass” cocktails. JW mixologists use fresh, seasonal and healthy ingredients to craft better-for-you drinks that are meant to be sipped and savored.

Located in the heart of Chicago’s River North neighborhood, il Porcellino is one of the latest ventures from the Lettuce Entertain You group, offering a cozy restaurant honing in on classic Italian-American comfort food. Seasonal menus feature homemade pastas that use locally sourced ingredients, plus a wide-ranging cocktail program. The Jimmy Two Times was inspired by the movie “Goodfellas” and boasts the flavors of rye whiskey, ginger and grapefruit.

Sidecar Slider Bar, a 92-seat spot in Birmingham featuring reclaimed wood from a barn near Bay City and a granite bar, shares an owner and a wall with its neighbor, Rojo Mexican Bistro. Sidecar aims to lure the late-night crowd, and has served this gin-based cocktail.

—.75 oz. Cocchi Americano
—.75 oz. lemon juice
—slice of cucumber

INGREDIENTS
—1 oz. marshmallow vodka
—1 oz. Richardo’s Decaf Coffee Liqueur
—1 oz. cream
—chocolate syrup
—graham cracker crumbs
—toasted marshmallows

DIRECTIONS
Dip the rim of a martini glass in a shallow dish of chocolate syrup and then in a dish of fine graham cracker crumbs. Combine marshmallow vodka, Richardo’s Decaf Coffee Liqueur and cream in a martini shaker with ice. Pour into glass and garnish with toasted marshmallows.

Named for the Goldenrod plant that grows in the fall, there’s no better way to celebrate fall than with an apple brandy cocktail. 

INGREDIENTS
—1 oz. Laird’s bonded apple brandy
—1 oz. Woodford rye
—.5 oz. Cointreau
—.5 oz. Benedictine
—.75 oz. lemon juice
—1 egg white

DIRECTIONS
Combine all ingredients in a mix - ing tin and dry shake to emulsify the egg white, add ice and shake until cold. Double strain into cold cup and garnish with a thin slice of red apple.

Signature Drink: The Handsome Haymaker

This singular cocktail, created by Chris Burmeister, lead bartender at Outpost (the restaurant at The Goodland hotel in Santa Barbara), was inspired by one its ingredients, Avua Amburana Cachaca—a distilled Brazilian spirit made from fresh sugarcane juice. The ageing of the amburana wood of the cachaça releases intoxicating notes of cinnamon and baking spice. Burmeister wanted to highlight those flavors. He decided to do a riff on a milk punch, using the masala chai syrup as a sweetener to complement the cachaça.

Freedmen’s Bar in Austin is a laid-back lounge, beer garden, and smokehouse serving barbecue and retro-inspired cocktails in a historic Austin building. Bartenders often work in tangent with Pitmaster Evan LeRoy, using ingredients that are smoked alongside the restaurant’s awardwinning barbecue. 

INGREDIENTS:
—1.5 oz. Botanist Gin
—.75 oz. lavender syrup
—.75 oz. lemon juice

DIRECTIONS:
Muddle cucumber. Top with soda and stir. Garnish with edible flower
