• Hilton's Xeros Washing System Revolutionizes Laundry Day

Who knew a laundry system could be so eco-friendly? Striving to grow their sustainability features, the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City installed the Xeros bead-based laundry system back in October 2014. In early March 2017, the hotel announced its good news—the Xeros polymer bead-based washing system, certified Gold in Green Seal's stringent GS-33 certification standard for lodging properties, has saved more than 2 million gallons of water year over year.

Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City is one of seven Green Seal certified hotels that are part of the Los Angeles’ rapidly growing Green Lodging Program. The project falls under the city’s broader Sustainable City pLAn, which lays out a road map for a more sustainable Los Angeles by 2020.

"Given the drought conditions that Los Angeles has been experiencing, the Hilton's commitment to this exceptional water conservation technology is a demonstration of environmental leadership," says Gary Petersen, head of Green Seal's California office.

The secret ingredient is replacing hot water with stain-absorbing polymer beads, reducing the amount of water used in each load by 80 percent. The hotel has seen an 83 percent reduction in total water consumption and a 100 percent reduction in hot water consumption.

"Installing this system not only helps us conserve water and save money, it allows us to establish a positive response to saving water in this time of drought," says Mark Davis, general manager.

Using this system also decreases the hotel’s carbon footprint and chemicals associated with traditional washing systems. It even lower’s utility bills—using three Xeros machines can save up to $6,600 a month.

Through responses to bi-weekly surveys, Global Business Travel Association members have indicated that domestic busines travel is ramping up after months of struggle.
