Sun-drenched views of the Detroit River, fun entertainment and great camaraderie contributed to an exciting event packed with award presentations during the Michigan Meetings + Events magazine Best of 2018 readers’ choice awards.

Held May 23 at Cobo Center’s Portside Ballroom in downtown Detroit, the extrava - ganza saluted everyone from caterers and florists to meeting planners and host cities. A special thanks goes out to our event partners Cobo Center, Emerald City Designs, Empty Canvas, Iron Fish Distillery, Shutter Booth and Mike Staff Productions with its Kurt Colone handling emcee duties again this year.

Thanks also to Experience Grand Rapids, the presenting sponsor, and event sponsors Frankenmuth Convention and Visitors Bureau, Great Lakes Bay Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau, Viviano Flower Shop, Blue Water Area Convention & Visitor Bureau and Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Awards were presented in 33 categories, plus seven meetings and events superstars were recognized in the 2018 Hall of Fame. We hope to see you at next year’s event on May 22, 2019 at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

For its September 2019 meeting, the National Association for Catering and Events (NACE) Philadelphia Chapter—which serves industry professionals in the Greater Philadelphia, South Jersey and Delaware region—thought it would try something different. Instead of focusing on the visual presentation of food, organizers took away the sense of sight entirely, outfitting diners with a blindfold at dinner.

From May 1 to July 14, Philadelphians were enthralled by Chinese culture at the 4th annual Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival held in historic Franklin Square. Attendees witnessed 27 lantern displays that were larger than life and made of more than 2,000 lit sculptures and 20,000 LED lights.
