The Detroit Zoo is in the process of developing a new Discovery Trails attraction on 7 acres within its existing footprint, providing engaging opportunities for planners to take advantage of that bring attendees up close and personal with wildlife. Officials expect the new immersive experience to be ready in 2026.

The Detroit Zoo Discovery Trails is being designed around wildlife, and includes habitats for current as well as new species: alpacas, burrowing owls, bush dogs, goats, bamboo sharks, giant anteaters, miniature donkeys, and prairie dogs among them. The attraction allows the public to get more personal with wildlife through up-close animal encounters—imagine a tank where guests can touch and feed stingrays or a barnyard where visitors will be able to brush goats and feed chickens. With an additional focus on educational opportunities, other highlights of Detroit Zoo Discovery Trails include a simulated farmers market, garden grove and outdoor classroom, senses trail, and Little Sprouts area for the zoo’s youngest guests.

“This significant investment to our community is dedicated to the wonder of wildlife, the power of education, and the joy of discovery,” says Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director and CEO Dr. Hayley W. Murphy. “Curiosity and appreciation of nature will be sparked in new and innovative ways,” she adds.

The attraction will also include gathering spaces with sensory-friendly quiet areas that make it possible for visitors to step away from the pathways and play areas and take a moment to reset. The zoo currently offers options for private rentals including picnics, outdoor meals for group events,  private evening takeovers, and charity walks. An emphasis on sustainable and accessible features continues to be a priority and is also woven into the Discovery Trails project.

The Discovery Trails project is expected to cost more than $20 million—a large investment that aligns with the zoo’s mission to create meaningful connections between, people, animals, and the natural world, according to officials. Most of the funding is coming from grants and gifts.

Leaders predict that the Detroit Zoo Discovery Trails will spark higher guest traffic, and expect the zoo’s regional economic impact to grow to $185 million annually.

Detroit Zoo Director of Communications Jeff Sell says the zoo will continue to release updates as the Detroit Zoo Discovery Trails project progresses. For more information, visit dzoo.org/discoverytrails.
