At this year’s Michigan Airport Conference, held late last month and co-sponsored by the Michigan Association of Airport Executives (MAAE) and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), MDOT recognized outstanding achievements in aviation—highlighting excellence in airport operations, aviation consulting, and community impact.

Nominees were selected by the MDOT Office of Aeronautics’ staff and airport community members. “The hard work and dedication these airports and individuals have made are truly commendable in making airports safe, connecting people, recruiting new talent, and growing the economy,” says Bryan Budds, director of the MDOT Office of Aeronautics, in a prepared statement.

The award winners are as follows:

Sandusky City Airport earned this year’s General Aviation Airport of the Year award for its unwavering commitment to safety and system-wide improvements. Under the leadership of Airport Manager Don Johnston, the airport has prioritized obstruction removal to ensure a safer environment for both pilots and passengers.

Traverse City’s Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) was recognized for its outstanding efforts in aviation growth and progress. The airport played a key role in developing a new zoning ordinance to protect airspace and enhance public safety. Its leadership in air service recruitment and retention also strengthened the broader aviation community in the state. “When a community is dedicated to flying locally, the entire region benefits enormously,” says Kevin Klein, CEO of Cherry Capital Airport. “I’m incredibly proud of ‘team TVC’ and our community.”
