Work continues to progress on the Hudson’s Detroit development, home to the first Midwest location for the luxury global hospitality Edition Hotels brand.

Hudson’s Detroit is a mixed-use development located on the former site of the J.L. Hudson Department Store, razed in 1998. The development will feature a plaza with streetscape linking Woodward Avenue to Library Square; a seven-story office atrium; a range of event spaces suitable for large conferences and corporate functions; a rooftop venue with outdoor terrace offering food, beverages, and city views; a variety of restaurants, bars, and cafes; and retail outlets.

“A dramatic event hall, ample pre-function space, and state-of-the-art meeting rooms will make up the second and third floor of Hudson’s,” says Andrew Leber, vice president of hospitality at Detroit-based Bedrock, the real estate firm that purchased the old Hudson’s site and is developing the property. “We look forward to sharing more details about event spaces later this year.”

Since Bedrock was founded in 2011, the company and its affiliates have invested and committed more than $7.5 billion to acquire, develop, and operate more than 140 properties in Detroit and Cleveland.

The Detroit Edition will occupy all 45 floors of the new tower along with The Residences at The Detroit Edition—97 condos being built above the hotel. In addition to guest rooms, the Detroit Edition at Hudson’s Detroit will offer four food and beverage outlets, 16,000-plus square feet of event space, a pool, large outdoor terrace, fitness center, and spa.

“The Detroit Edition will be downtown Detroit’s first five-star hotel, bringing luxury rooms and top-tier amenities to the heart of the city,” Leber says.

Initial tenant move-ins at Hudson’s Detroit start next year, and Lever says The Detroit Edition as well as the condos should be available beginning in 2027.

General Motors plans to become the development’s anchor tenant, relocating its global headquarters from the GM Renaissance Center. While the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is the tallest building in Michigan, Hudson’s Detroit—at 685.4 feet— becomes the second-tallest.
