The South Haven/Van Buren County Convention and Visitors Bureau has purchased a parcel in downtown South Haven that may eventually culminate in the development of a multiuse space.

The approximately 1/4 acre of land has been vacant for a decade, having previously been the site of a variety of businesses including a bank, says Jennifer Sistrunk, executive director of the South Haven/Van Buren County CVB. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

“At present, the future use of the property remains undecided,” Sistrunk explains. “While there has been consideration for a new office, the possibility of developing a multiuse space aligns with our broader goals of destination development. Given its strategic location at the entrance to downtown South Haven, we are exploring various possibilities that complement our mission and enhance the area’s appeal.”

Sistrunk says destination development is an effective marketing strategy. The CVB is committed to enhancing the appeal of the area with strategic amenities and infrastructure. In fact, the South Haven/Van Buren County CVB recently contributed to purchase land near the Black River, supporting the South Haven Area Recreation Authority in creating a new kayak launch and parking area. “This initiative underscores our commitment to enriching the destination’s offerings and its promotional potential,” says Sistrunk.

Over the next year, the CVB will conduct an economic impact study to determine the most beneficial use of the property. Members—that include area hotels, bed and breakfasts, resorts, vacation homes, and campgrounds, along with other stakeholders—will be invited to provide input as well. There is no timeline to move a project forward yet.

“Our priority is a careful and deliberate approach to the property’s development,” Sistrunk adds, “ensuring it aligns with our strategic objectives and benefits the community.”

The South Haven/Van Buren County CVB represents South Haven as well as Van Buren County, supporting lodging partners through efforts to attract more visitors to the area.
