Detroit has been named the host city for the 2024 NFL draft, a first for the Motor City.

In making the announcement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, evoked the local NFL team. “The Draft has become a prominent offseason event across the country, and we are excited to work with the Lions and their partners to bring the 2024 NFL Draft to the Motor City,” he said. “With the help of Visit Detroit, the Detroit Sports Commission, and the City of Detroit, the Lions passionate fan base and all visitors will be treated to an incredible three-day experience.”

Detroit isn’t waiting until 2024 to enjoy some revelry. The Detroit Sports Commission is inviting the public to a free, football-themed community event on Thursday, April 14, at Campus Martius Park to celebrate the awarding of the 2024 NFL Draft. The event will start at 4:30 p.m. with music, fan activities, appearances by Lions legends, swag giveaways, food trucks, and more. A program emceed by NFL on CBS analyst Charles Davis will include remarks from key dignitaries and the unveiling of a custom interactive display representing the historic announcement.

The three-day NFL Draft is expected to be a big boon to the city, driving spending on hotel stays, restaurants, local shops and attractions; providing an opportunity to show off Detroit’s resurgence and, according to news release issued by the Detroit Sports Commission, supporting community initiatives.

“The NFL’s decision to select Detroit as the host city for the 2024 NFL Draft is a huge win for our city and its residents and is a testament to the revitalization and synergy that is happening,” said Detroit Sports Commission Executive Director Dave Beachnau. “Along with the interconnectivity of our philanthropic and corporate sectors, Detroit is an iconic American city that has deep roots in culture, music, food, and the automotive industry, which is why we are uniquely positioned to host this global event.”

Visit Detroit CEO Claude Molinari sees the April 14th celebration as a key opportunity to showcase the city. “The 2024 NFL Draft Community Celebration will be an exciting snapshot of the energy, passion and excitement metro Detroit residents and sports fans will bring to the table when the national spotlight is on Detroit in two years,” he said. “Our mission at Visit Detroit is to attract large-scale events and activities that draw in residents from across the region. We’re confident the community celebration event on April 14 and the 2024NFL Draft will do just that.”
