Canterbury Park in Shakopee is building a 19,000-seat amphitheater as part of a larger expansion project that will bring more restaurants, entertainment options, and a hotel to the campus of Minnesota’s only horse-racing track.

“It’s certainly going to be the largest amphitheater in Minnesota,” says Jason Haugen, vice president of real estate for Canterbury Park. “It’s an arena, for all intents and purposes. They’ll have a plaza within the amphitheater project, with opportunities to host events there, as well.”

Construction on the amphitheater is underway, and Haugen expects it will host its first concerts and other events in May 2025. The amphitheater is being built and will be run by Swervo Development. In addition to the amphitheater, Canterbury Park hosts events in the grandstand that overlooks the track, the paddock, and a new brewpub, Badger Hill Brewery.

“We just have a unique experience out here,” Haugen adds. “With horse racing, think people gravitate toward that.”
