The North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association has partnered with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association, Placer County, the town of Truckee and various ski resorts to launch the area’s first Free Ski Shuttle. The shuttle runs between nine ski resorts on weekends and holiday weeks through March 31. This is the first time a free service like this has been used in the region.
“Our goal is simple,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “Get visitors out of their cars by providing a seamless, hassle-free transportation alternative during the winter months.”
The Free Ski Shuttle includes nine properties: Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar California, Homewood Mountain Resort, Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, Soda Springs and Royal Gorge.
Officials have labeled the new project a success; with numbers totaling 395 riders within the first five days of the Christmas holiday. The flexible schedule also gives riders the ability to participate in après ski activities and lowers the carbon footprint in the area by providing accessible group transportation.
“Going carless helps reduce traffic congestion and thereby vehicle emissions which can deteriorate the lake’s clarity,” said Chapman. “Lake Tahoe is a fragile ecosystem and we all need to do our part to keep the region pristine.”
Additional Free Ski Shuttles can be found at Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Homewood Mountain Resort, Northstar California and Diamond Peak.
