The Happiness Factor: Utah Ranked #1

By M+E Staff

I’m pleased to announce that Mountain Meetings, launched in the spring of 2013 and currently publishing two issues per year, received a Silver Award in the Single-Topic Issue, Special Section or Special Supplement Under 60,000 circulation category at the Minnesota Magazine & Publishing Association’s Excellence Awards on Nov. 13 in Minneapolis.

MMPA presents awards in the areas of editorial, design, marketing, digital publishing and overall excellence, and we are thrilled to be recognized. Our parent company, Tiger Oak Publications, is based in Minneapolis. Thank you to the great team that makes Mountain Meetings and all our sister Meetings + Events publications possible.

Since we are on a happy note, WalletHub recently released a report about the Most and Least Happy States in America, so I thought it might be interesting to look at how the Mountain West states fared. WalletHub analyzed the 50 states and District of Columbia across 26 key metrics, ranging from emotional health, hours worked weekly and volunteerism to income levels and sports participation rates. Here are the results.

1 – Utah

4 – Colorado

6 – Wyoming

10 – Idaho

12 – Alaska

14 – California

17 – Washington

20 – Montana

29 – Oregon

30 – New Mexico

31 – Arizona

32 – Nevada

More details about the results, methodology and additional insights from experts can be found online. Some of these states have more mountains than others, so who knows if there is a correlation or not, it’s just interesting stuff. In addition to being a Colorado native and resident, I also have spent a fair amount of time living in the Midwest (namely Nebraska and Iowa), which had five states crack the top 10:

#2 Minnesota

#3 North Dakota

#5 Nebraska

#7 Iowa

#9 South Dakota.

Watch out mountain states, you have been outranked just slightly by the Midwest in the top 10, but a great showing for both regions!
