The Robey, a 1929 art deco building located on the corner of Damen Avenue and North Avenue, is set for a makeover. The Robey is hard to miss, the 69-room hotel has a café, second-floor lounge, guest-only rooftop lounge, and in 2017, a rooftop pool. Grupo Habita will headline the project, with the hopes of modernizing the hotel without losing its character.
Its prism-like shape makes The Robey a unique building on the Wicker Park and Bucktown border. Built out of glass, wood, concrete and chrome, it earned the nickname Coyote Building due to its likening of a howling animal.
Nicolas Schuybroek Architects and Marc Merckx Interiors redesigned every inch of the hotel, and 12-story building still has the original limestone on the art deco façade. There are many art deco references throughout many of the rooms that are contrasted by minimalist, contemporary furniture.
Rooms all have shower, king-sized beds and views of Wicker Park and Bucktown. Café Robey, on the ground floor of the hotel, is led by chef Bradley Stellings, who brings a French-American flavor to The Robey’s guests. The café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as brunch on the weekends.
The rooftop pool will open in spring 2017 and will have a full-service Cabana Club that will be serving Greek-inspired foods.
