CHIHULY Welcomes Visitors to New York City for Summer Days & CHIHULY Nights

By M+E Staff

One of the most exciting events this summer for visitors of New York City is CHIHULY, an exhibit at The New York Botanical Garden. Artist Dave Chihuly created the artworks in the exhibit to be a sensory-filled experience offered between spring and fall, including art programs for children, weekend celebrations and CHIHULY nights.

EVERETT CHILDREN’S ADVENTURE GARDEN

Children can delve into the shapes and colors of plants, amongst Chihuly’s glass sculptures in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, also offering supplies to build your own habitat for an air plant. This opportunity is available 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. until Oct. 29, 2017.

CHIHULY NIGHTS

At night, the Chihuly sculptures are lit up in the New York Botanical Garden’s Conservatory. In addition to the magical quality of the glowing artworks, musicians and artists will perform in the Visitor Center Plaza, creating an ambiance for visitors choosing to shop, eat, and drink the Avion Tequila cocktails available. CHIHULY Nights will vary throughout the summer, as they will occur Saturdays from April 29-June 24, Thursdays from July to August, and Thursdays through Saturdays from September to October. Each CHIHULY Night will be from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

JAZZ & CHIHULY: A SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

In addition to CHIHULY Nights, a summer concert series due to a collaboration with Catskill Jazz Factory and Absolutely Live Entertainment will be offered in the Conservatory of the Botanical Gardens. This three-night concert series will feature individuals with a talent for jazz music and allows New York City visitors to bring lawn chairs and blankets to relax on the Conservatory Lawn. In between concerts, visitors can explore the illuminated CHIHULY glass sculptures, while enjoying light food and beverages. One concert will be offered once a month on Fridays this summer, on June 16, July 14, and August 18; from 6:30 until 10:30 p.m. Tickets will cost $40 for members, and $45 for non-members.

SUMMER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION

On June 17, the New York Botanical Gardens will showcase its Chihuly exhibit by celebrating the Summer Solstice (which is actually June 21). Beginning at 9 a.m., two yoga classes will be offered, with Yoga to the People from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and Yoga-Rama for Kids & Families from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. In addition to yoga, there will be a Special Reading by Young Poets from 12 to 1 p.m., which includes winners of the Chihuly Poetry Walk Contest reading their poems, hosted by Jacqueline Woodson, who authored Brown Girl Dreaming and other award winning children’s books. Finally, there will be Flame Work Demonstrations and Live Music and Lawn Games to close out the afternoon. Although the Summer Solstice is actually June 21, the celebration will be held June 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

CHILLIN’ WITH CHIHULY

Later in the summer people can visit Chihuly’s exhibit while also viewing live glass fire working demonstrations. With treats and refreshments available to purchase, visitors can fully relax to live music on the Conservatory Lawn. These demonstrations will take place on Aug. 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

If visitors need help getting to the New York Botanical Gardens, they can purchase a NYBG Getaway Purchase from Metro-North Railroad, either at a Metro-North ticket window or in Grand Central Terminal.
