San Francisco Proper Hotel Debuting in Flatiron Hotel Building

By M+E Staff

Opening in August 2017, the San Francisco Proper Hotel is transforming a flatiron hotel building into a luxury lifestyle hotel on the corner of 7th and Market. With San Francisco as its muse, the hotel helps resurge the area with its design as a culturally connected hangout in the up-and-coming rebuild of the neighborhood.

“Proper Hospitality and The Kor Group have been committed to helping develop this dynamic community, investing significant time and resources into delivering our first flagship hotel and our own unique brand of taking care: of guests, of a building, of a neighborhood,” says Alex Samek, co-founder of Proper Hospitality and principal of The Kor Group.

The Kor Group, along with world-renowned interior designer Kelly Wearstler attended to the design of the space, focusing on the Beaux-Arts elements of the original building, carrying out a European influence and residential feel throughout the entire space. The historic lobby houses a European-style lounge, along with a European modernist restaurant. Other amenities of the hotel include a rooftop terrace with views of San Francisco, fully equipped fitness center with machines, free weights and Shinola bicycles, and its 131 chic and practical guest rooms, that come with Aesop bath products, Aireloom mattresses, Vifa speakers and Bellino fine linens. For all types of guests, Proper Hotel is also unveiling the Proper App, where guests can access all services at the Proper Hotel and Residences from their mobile phones or tablets. For corporate groups, Proper Hotel has many different types of meeting spaces, including a boardroom that houses 14, a meeting room that seats 50-75 and also offers more spaces such as the dining room, the rooftop or the restaurant.

“While carefully preserving the original elements of this classified landmark, we looked to bring something new to San Francisco by collaging a reimagining of past, present and future,” says Wearstler. “The spirit of pre-modernist European influence, hand-selected vintage furnishings and works by local artists are all part of the warm, inviting design mix.”

Attending to the restaurants in the hotel are cocktail consultants Josh Harris and Morgan Shick of BVHospitality, who previously worked for Rio Grande, which occupied the ground floor of the building before the redesign. The executive chef selected for Proper Hotel is James Beard-nominated chef Jason Franey, who launched his career in San Francisco, and will be in charge of the indoor and outdoor spaces that make up the dining space.

The opening of the Proper Hotel in San Francisco prepares the public for its upcoming openings in Santa Monica, Austin, and Downtown LA. The San Francisco Proper Hotel is the only member in San Franciscoof Design Hotels, which is a portfolio of design-driven hospitality experiences. Rates start at $400 a night, and can be booked by visiting www.properhotel.com/san-francisco, or to get more information, visit @properhotelsandresidences on Instagram.

“As we do on all our projects, we sought out not only local, best-in-class partners, but also true hospitality veterans with market expertise to bring our vision to life in San Francisco,” says Brian De Lowe, president and co-founder of Proper Hospitality, and president and principal of The Kor Group. “Our collective talent will be critical to launching this flagship hotel and to propelling the mission of Proper Hospitality forward.”
