Yakima Central Plaza has been approved for development and construction in Yakima Valley, Wash. This will be a $12-million dollar project to convert a parking lot into a public gathering and event space that will be used year-round.
“The plaza will provide a new, dynamic amenity for our residents while attracting visitors and meetings to Yakima,” says John Cooper, president and CEO of Yakima Valley Tourism and a member of the Plaza Steering Committee. “It will be the place everyone gathers to celebrate and enjoy what makes the Yakima Valley special.”
Former Yakima native and esteemed landscape architect, Kathryn Gustafson of GGN in Seattle, Wash., designed the plaza. Gustafson has designed the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in London and the Gardens of the Imagination in Terrasson, France. Her inspiration for the plaza draws from various aspects of Yakima Valley and will include running-water channels, a grove of trees, a shaded structure, terraced seating and more.
The estimated completion date for this project is unknown; however, they hope to finish it in 2018. For more details, visit yakimacentralplaza.com.
