Sandra McDowell was recently hired as the director of human resources for West Virginia’s Stonewall Resort.

1. What are you looking forward to the most in your new role?

My previous HR experience has been in manufacturing, distribution and retail. The opportunity to work in the hospitality industry broadens my field of human resources. Though many of the HR skills and competencies bridge from one industry to another, there is always something new to learn.

2. How do you think past experiences have prepared you for this role?

Brand image is vital to any business. Benchmark’s goal is to be the standard that others are measured by. My past employers had brand image as a foundation to their business as well.

3. How did you get into the industry?

A few years ago, I worked with a manager who is now a director at Stonewall Resort. When the position opened at Stonewall, he contacted me. On his recommendation, I applied, was interviewed and selected.

4. What are you hoping to achieve in your new role?

I want to provide support to the leadership team and continue to build on the positive relationships with our associates. We have some very long service and dedicated associates who want to advance. It is my responsibility to help them achieve those goals.

5. What do you enjoy most about the industry?

The people. I have met associates who want to make sure that the families and conference attendees who come to Stonewall Resort have the best experience possible. I am blessed to work at one of the most beautiful resorts in West Virginia.
