The oppressive heat of the last few weeks has been giving new meaning to “dog days of summer.” It is enough to make you want to stay indoors but with winter coming soon, I can’t bear to stay inside.
So how do you stay cool and get outside? Climb aboard the Thunder Cat! This electric yellow catamaran docks in Wildwood Crest and seats 49 guests. While I went on a weekend for an afternoon leisure cruise, Thunder Cat also doubles as a fantastic get-out-of-the-office option. The boat can be chartered for private groups for $1,000 from Memorial Day to Labor Day and charters can pick their day and time of choice. If you decide to join a public cruise, the boat has six sailings per day, seven days a week.
But it’s not just scenic views of the Cape May coast that you’ve climbed aboard for—there also are dolphins! Yes, New Jersey has dolphins. In fact, Wildwood and Cape May are home to 2,000 to 3,000 dolphins each summer (These wise animals head south to the Carolinas in the late fall).
The catamaran’s smaller size makes it possible to get up close and personal with the dolphins. The best part is watching them surf the boat’s wake! They jump and dive right with the boat. The 90-minute ride also includes a peek at the shipwreck known as Concrete Ship. It’s an easy, breezy way to spend time together with clients or colleagues on the Jersey Shore.
