Located on University Avenue, Stem is a go-to spot for any local. Now a staple of Northeast Minneapolis, this intimate venue, along with its neighborhood setting, complements the hustle and bustle of the surrounding area. From charity events and fundraisers to wedding receptions and corporate parties, Stem is the ideal location for intimate gatherings.
Stem’s current location maintains some of its original history. In 1844, the building served as a Northeast Minneapolis firehouse. Black-and-white photos of the building’s old look are featured at the restaurant’s front. “It was fun to breathe some life and energy and warmth into [a building] that was just sitting there,” says Ivy Taheri, owner.
Complete with a constantly rotating menu, Stem features a delectable variety of artfully presented drinks and cuisine, including classic fan favorites like King Crab Benedict and Avocado Toast. The speakeasy-style atmosphere is enhanced by the cozy aesthetic and relaxed seating, and Taheri concludes that there’s no bad seat in the house.
A long bench-style booth near the front can seat a party of 20, while the supplementary seating features half-moon-shaped booths, allowing guests to easily view their surroundings. With 2,100 square feet of space, the restaurant can easily seat a group of 50-60 and a larger group of 90 standing. There is some cafe seating outside as well as a few options for semi-private dining. Additional amenities include a valet permit and a parking ramp just around the corner. Although no catering options are available, Stem allows outside food and beverage catering for guests who rent the space but don’t use the kitchen services.
