Gallery One Visual Art Center opened in Ellensburg, Washington, on Aug. 29, 1968, as the Ellensburg Community Art Gallery. For the next 30 years, Eveleth Green served as the gallery director, and in 1994 the name was changed to Gallery One Visual Art Center. In April 1972, the gallery relocated to the second floor of the Stewart Building.
Following a renovation of the Stewart Building in the early 2000s, Gallery One expanded its space from the second floor to the entire building. The 5,000-square-foot space now includes a full kitchen, gift shop, exhibition galleries on the main floor and a courtyard. There is also an Eveleth Green Gallery on the top floor, as well as classrooms and artist studios.
“In addition to being partners for local events such as Art Walk, Buskers in the Burg, BrewFest and Jazz in the Valley, we produce four major events a year: our annual members’ party in February; a Soup Line Benefit in April; Central WA Arts Confab, a two-day professional-development weekend for artists, in June; and Paint Ellensburg, our major fundraiser,” says Sarah Haven, the venue’s retail manager and rentals contact.
Gallery One hosts numerous other events, including a workshop for adults with disabilities, open studios, a glass workshop, a date night and an event on the first Friday of every month. In addition, the center is available for private rentals for weddings and corporate events for up to 180 guests. It can also host group art parties.
