Planner’s Pocket Dictionary: Photography & Videography

WHEN IT COMES TO SPECIAL EVENTS—if it’s not documented, it’s like it never happened. Powerful photography and videography are often at the forefront of the agenda for planners. So we connected with Cara Nava of Carasco Photography to snap some key terms you should know.

archives – location where media is stored for future use or reference.

b-roll – secondary video of backstage, candid or other activity often used to supplement primary footage of a main presentation.

behind the scenes – photo or video content captured beyond public view of the main event.

caption – a title or explanation of an illustration, image or media.

content capture – the action of taking photos and videos for distribution or archival purposes.

copyright – the exclusive legal right given to an originator or an assignee of creative works.

distribution – the act or method of sharing content through editorial, digital or social media.

front row – a type of who’s who content, with an emphasis on seat assignment/location.

full scope – comprehensive coverage of event.

gif booth – a photo booth that captures multiple shots for each session that are then combined into a motion gif.

grip + grin – image of event attendees posing and smiling together in a group shot.

livestream – Internet broadcast of a live event, containing both live and virtual components.

license – a permit or permission to use photos or media for a specified purpose.

photo opportunity – a desirable or ideal moment for content capture that is typically staged.

photo booth – photo capture of event attendees that is often customized, themed and/or branded; images can be printed on-site, uploaded online or distributed post-event.

pre-shot – image of event setup prior to guest arrivals that showcases brand presence, furniture and fixtures, catering highlights or overall design.

promotional content – photo and video edited and distributed for marketing or advertising purposes.

sea of heads – wide frame shot that captures a large crowd. shot list – list of requested images provided by the event organizer to the event photographer.

step + repeat – media backdrop comprised of brands and logos for red carpet photo opportunities.

time lapse – content captured over an extended period of time and sped up when edited.

turnaround – time needed by an event photographer or videographer to upload, edit and deliver content.

wire image – photos distributed online for high-profile, celebrity or media-driven events.

Wi-Fi card – memory card with built-in Wi-Fi that automatically uploads digital photos to a local computer or mobile device.
