Aerial Fitness Spices Up Your Group’s Workout

By Maya Fanjul-Debnam

For a workout that will literally send you flying, Northeast Minneapolis’ The Aviary is the gym for you. Established in 2015, The Aviary is a boutique fitness studio that offers full-body workouts and yoga classes using aerial hammocks. If that sounds intimidating, rest assured that this low-impact activity is anything but.

“Our classes are designed to make you stronger and to show you that with proper instruction, anyone can perform basic aerial moves,” says Christine Longe, owner and founder. “The aerial moves are in fact the easiest part of any class since our instructors provide easy-tofollow verbal cues and hands-on assistance to help everyone succeed.”

Aerial fitness is not just for small, fit people or for acrobatic circus performers; it can accommodate all body types and fitness levels. Few people have the grace—or waistline—of a ballerina, and The Aviary knows that. Instructors work with beginners every day to help clients work their way up to new levels of strength and flexibility. All body types and fitness levels are encouraged to participate, so long as you don’t mind being upside down.

The Aviary also specializes in hosting Signature Private Parties, perfect for a small gathering. The maximum group size is 15 people; parties are two hours long and guests will learn aerial poses, tricks and inversions in their first hour. The rest of the time is open for guests to take photos of their favorite moves and enjoy food or beverages they have brought. The Aviary has hosted over 80 parties in the last 10 months that range from corporate teambuilding to bachelorette parties.

“No experience is required to take our Intro to Aerials class or attend a Signature Private Party,” assures Longe. “These formats are designed to be appropriate for any level of fitness and we limit our class size to 15 people. Less people means you get more one-on-one time to help you succeed at the moves and keep you safe.”
