Casablanca-Inspired Tablescape Straight from the Silver Screen

Inspiration

“ROMANCE! Airplanes and flight have always had an undeniably mysterious and romantic appeal,” says Kathy Newman, event planner. “As a child, I had the privilege of spending a lot of time at McGuire Air Force Base as my father was an officer in the Air Force. Princeton Airport is one of my favorite venues. It has a special allure, one that allows you to create any type of event that you can imagine in an empty airplane hangar—now how cool is that? There is always the romantic element that reminds you of old movies where mystery and courtship were alive and well. This was my inspiration—where old and new converge. The old-fashioned romance of flight coupled with a windswept, fun and colorful tablescape. I think the world could use a little old-fashioned feeling (and not one that is muddled)!”

The Details

Under the wing of this 1957 T28C Trojan, as revealed by the ribbon of black exhaust whimsically painted across the body of this training plane, sits a table set for adventure seekers.

This table breaks the rules from the onset by mixing and matching polka dot salad plates with a bright yellow striped table linen. Layered upon the bold yellow dinner plate and the polka dot salad plate, the mysterious and exotic women depicted upon designer Kate Spade’s Charm plates entice their guests to “make mischief” and “travel bright.”

Continuing the theme of adventure, a centerpiece of green spider mums, green hypericum berries, orange gerbers, green carnations and bare grass is daringly wrapped with whole raw carrots tied together with natural raffia.

A smaller arrangement of pink attache roses and green hypericum berries wrapped in cabbage sits upon a vintage suitcase at the foot of the table.

Guests dining in this alfresco vignette will certainly be swept away by the lure of escape and excitement.

Design Tip

Newman offers: “Mix and match patterns and colors—take risks with your designs. The unexpected is usually the most interesting and may even set a trend!”
