Dedicated to the art form of making people laugh, the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York, earned the award for No. 1 Best Pop Culture Museum in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards released in mid-February. Fellow nominees in the category included the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati; Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California; Atlanta’s World of Coca-Cola; The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York; and San Diego’s Comic-Con Museum. The win comes after a four-week national online voting period from Jan. 12 to Feb. 9.
“This national recognition from USA Today is a powerful acknowledgment of the extraordinary artists who have shaped comedy—the great minds, singular voices, and time-honed creative processes that have elevated this art form throughout its history,” says Journey Gunderson, executive director of the National Comedy Center, in a prepared statement. “Comedians past and present have helped us see the world differently, challenge conventions, and bring people together through laughter. We’re honored to celebrate their work and grateful to the artists, supporters, and audiences who believe in preserving comedy’s heritage while inspiring new generations.”
The center’s 50-plus immersive exhibits provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creative processes of comedy, as well as an interactive journey through comedy history, from early vaudeville to the latest memes. For planners, the National Comedy Center offers group rates for visits, as well as space for private events and full buyouts of the museum. Its George and Jolene Brand Schlatter Theater seats up to 80 for presentations, and its Tent and Patio Bar on the backside of the facility is adjacent to the picturesque Jamestown Riverwalk and available to rent from late spring through early autumn.
“Comedy sits at the heart of American pop culture, and at the National Comedy Center, visitors can experience it in a deeply personal and engaging way,” says Gary Hahn, vice president of marketing and communications at the National Comedy Center. “Our interactive exhibits connect people to the moments, memories, and cultural touchstones that shaped their lives—it’s what draws them to Jamestown and helps make it a destination for visitors from across the country and around the world.”
