Great Allegheny Passage Earns Honors

By M+E Staff

Pittsburgh may be known as The Steel City, but it has plenty of greenery, too, and opportunities for groups attending meetings here to get out in nature. The Pittsburgh CVB, which has the tagline “Only in Pittsburgh,” has proudly shared the news that the Great Allegany Passage was named a winner in the 2022 USA Today “10Best Readers’ Choice” travel award contest for “best recreational trail.”

Locally known as the GAP trail, the CVB shared, this 150-mile, non-motorized path connects to the C&O Canal Towpath, leading visitors from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. It begins and ends at Point State Park, marked by a bronze medallion next to the famous fountain at the park’s triangular tip.

The nearly flat GAP trail provides outdoor enthusiasts with a gentle grade and smooth surface, as well as spectacular views of Southwest Pennsylvania. Plus, riders and hikers travel through charming trail towns and near National Landmarks, such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater.

“Pittsburgh is an area resplendent with green space, with unique outdoor adventures around every bend,” said VisitPITTSBURGH Chief Marketing Officer Susan Klein. “The Great Allegheny Passage is certainly a can’t-miss experience when visiting Pittsburgh. Whether you want to take on the entire trail or rent a bicycle for a leisurely ride, the GAP trail offers visitors a unique, memorable way to explore our great region.”

Visitors can explore the GAP trail on their own or with a group through Golden Triangle Bike Rental, which offers trip planning, itineraries, bike rentals, luggage transfer, transportation and more. Learn more at VisitPITTSBURGH.com.
