Delaware’s largest city and meetings hub, Wilmington, sits at the confluence of Brandywine Creek and the Christina River, the latter of which is a tributary of the larger Delaware River. The metropolis lies in proximity to several major Northeast cities, making it a convenient choice for groups traveling from across the region. Wilmington also is known for being business-friendly—two-thirds of all Fortune 500 companies are incorporated in the city, earning it the nickname “Corporate Capital of America.”

Vibe: “We offer the city and country experience in one package,” says Jennifer Boes, executive director of the Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau. The city is rich with history and culture, and the riverfront area that anchors it offers plenty of dining options and nightlife. Just outside Wilmington sits the Brandywine Valley region, where rolling hills and winding country roads lead to the grand former gardens and estates of the famous du Pont family, French-descended gunpowder magnates.

Transportation: Greater Wil-mington is a 30-minute drive from Philadelphia, an hour from Baltimore, and two hours from New York City and Washington, D.C. Interstate 95 runs directly through the city, as does Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. Those flying in might choose the smaller Wilmington Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport is about 25 minutes away. Wilmington’s downtown area is very walkable, and Dart First State, Delaware’s public bus system, provides city and regional service.

Hotels: Historic Hotel du Pont downtown was constructed in 1913 as an extension of the original DuPont company headquarters (now located elsewhere) and features 217 guest rooms and 19 luxurious meeting spaces. Hilton Christiana and DoubleTree Wilmington North have the largest number of sleeping rooms in the region, as well as free parking. Connected to Chase Center on the Riverfront you will find The Westin Wilmington, Hyatt Place Wilmington Riverfront, and Homewood Suites by Hilton Wilmington Downtown.

Venues: Chase Center on the Riverfront is the largest venue in the Greater Wilmington area, with 90,000 square feet of exhibit space. Nearby, The Delaware Contemporary’s industrial-chic lobby and art galleries provide a memorable ambience for events. At the Delaware Museum of Nature & Science, attendees might network among dinosaurs and learn about ecosystems that exist around the world.

Restaurants: Go upscale-casual at staples like La Fia, French brasserie Le Cavalier within Hotel du Pont, or The Quoin Restaurant at The Quoin Hotel. Elevated comfort food might be found at Docklands Riverfront and Big Fish Grill, both along the water. Or, experience Wilmington’s melting pot of cultures with Del Pez’s Mexican cuisine, Hummingbird Island Cuisine’s Caribbean fare, or Al Chu’s Sushi for grab-and-go lunches.

Must-Sees & -Dos: “Walk the Wilmington Riverwalk,” says Boes. “There are great views and plenty of spots to grab a bite or beverage along the way.” The 1.3-mile path stretches from Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park to the DuPont Environmental Education Center. The Delaware History Museum, Jane and Littleton Mitchell Center for African American Heritage, and Delaware Art Museum all are available for group tours. Former du Pont family estates—including the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library—showcase the grandeur of the Gilded Age and give attendees a taste of Wilmington history.
