Tablescape: Farm-Fresh Florals

By Written and photographed by Natalie Wi

Third-generation Fernbrook Farm owners Larry “Farmer Q” Kuser and his wife, Susie, graciously welcome visitors to their home to learn about sustainability at their Environmental Education Center and the virtues of organic living through their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Larry’s great-grandfather, Anthony Kuser, purchased the 1750s farm in 1890. Anthony was known for consolidating the various gas and electric companies of Trenton into South Jersey Gas and Electric Lighting Company. He invested his fortune into several successful ventures including The Lenox Corporation, 20th Century Fox Films, Mercer Cars and the Trenton Old Stock Beer Company. As a result, Fernbrook Farms was accustomed to hosting dinners for countless guests through the years. Florist Janet Makrancy appropriately chose Fernbrook Farms as the venue for this pharmaceutical retreat where healthcare providers and sales representatives came together in support of an upcoming product launch.

Inspiration
Janet’s inspiration for the table stems from her attraction to the patterned designs of the MacKenzie-Childs home décor collection. “It’s a perfect fit for a fun, organic dining experience,” says Makrancy. The MacKenzie-Childs line features bold, whimsical designs hand-painted by artisans on a small farm in Aurora, New York. The brand is best known for its black-and-white checkerboard pattern.

Details
On this table, you’ll find pavé-style floral designs to appeal to the executive personality. These designs are tight and compact with little or no foliage and interest the Type A personality who prefers structure. The loose and airy arrangement of the wildflower design is reflective of the easy-going personality type referred to as the artist. The laid-back artist prefers unique flowers in unconventional and interesting arrangements. Both designs rest in vessels creatively wrapped in seasonal carrots and asparagus, pulling in the organic roots of Fernbrook Farms, and feature Billy Balls, seeded Eucalyptus, Queen Ann’s Lace, Hot Princess Roses, Mini Green Hydrangeas, Yellow Cottage Roses, Gerber Daisies and Astilbe.
