Ranchlands, a family ranching business that owns and operates livestock operations in the American West, opened its fifth ranch property on the western side of the Bighorn Mountains in Hyattville, Wyoming. The business first began agricultural operations on the land in 2021, soft opening it to members of Ranchlands Collective and returning Ranchlands guests last summer. The property will officially open to the general public this May.
“The Paintrock Canyon Ranch sprawls across northern Wyoming and is made up of meadows and streams carving through high alpine valleys,” describes Tess Leach, director of business development at Ranchlands. “The ranch’s landscape is characterized by the Paintrock Canyon, which starts at the ranch headquarters and meanders for eight miles, opening into the Paintrock Basin at the foot of Cloud Peak, the highest peak in the Bighorn range.” The ranch is located an hour and a half south of Cody, Wyoming, and three hours south of Billings, Montana. It is accessible by third-party shuttle servicing from the airports in Cody and Billings; car rentals are also available at both airports.
“Accommodations are in large, safari-style tents that are stylishly furnished with full and king-size beds, bedside tables, dressers, and chairs,” Leach adds. “The camp is set along the Paintrock Creek and features a full kitchen, hot showers, a tent for relaxing in the afternoon, a bar built into the surroundings, and a lantern-lined path connecting everything.”
Paintrock Canyon Ranch joins Ranchlands’ existing portfolio of properties including Zapata Ranch and Chico Basin Ranch in Colorado, MP Ranch in New Mexico, and Frying Pan Ranch in Texas. “Ranchlands has been hosting guests for 25 years on properties across the West and have perfected working with groups and individuals alike to create custom itineraries that immerse people in nature to realize the goals of their trips,” says Leach. Groups gathering at Paintrock Canyon Ranch can expect to enjoy activities ranging from horseback riding through the on-site cattle herd and hiking through Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site containing 2,000-year-old Native American petroglyphs to flyfishing and more. Visitors are also encouraged to get involved with the ranch’s team in the daily working ranch duties.
Visitors and event attendees will also enjoy fire-cooked meals by a private on-site chef featuring local produce and meat sourced directly from the ranch wherever possible, all fully customizable for group preference. On a regular basis, groups of up to 12 can be hosted at the ranch, and there is also a separate facility on-site that can host up to 30 and is available for three weeks each year. Paintrock Canyon Ranch is open seasonally from May through early October.
