Check Out New Spaces Around the M+E Venue Block

By Sheila Cain

With old-school gaming systems, a dance floor and slider versions of the adjoining Lunchbox Laboratory’s burgers available, it’s no wonder The Event Lab is a popular choice for corporate events or private parties.

Since it opened in September, The Event Lab has welcomed groups from T-Mobile and Microsoft, as well as noncorporate party-goers looking for a festive place to celebrate a birthday. The 1,000-square-foot meeting space can be customized based on need, says General Manager Mike Mercer, from a large, open space for presentations to a more intimate cocktail-party-style setting.

Unlike many venues that serve alcohol, children are welcome at The Event Lab. And parking is free, which is a deal just about as tasty as the venue’s Nutella shake.

EVENT SPACE: 1,000 square feet
GUESTS: 20–70 people
ELECTRONIC CAPABILITIES: Two 50-inch plasma TVs, Wi-Fi/audio/video, wireless high-definition transmitter for PC-to-TV presentations
AMENITIES: Eclectic décor, vintage Atari and Nintendo gaming systems, dance floor, full bar

This summer, even before The Jorgenson House’s new meeting space was completed in November, the owners accommodated a simple wish from a visiting family from Germany: They wanted to watch the televised Croatia versus Brazil World Cup soccer match in comfort. Renda and David Heimbigner made the vacationers comfortable in their 360-square-foot space, serving halibut lasagna, sliders, salads and dessert, and helping them cheer Brazil to victory.

The venue’s small size allows its operators to be accommodating and flexible, says Renda Heimbigner. The Jorgenson House, built in 1915, has operated as a bed-and-breakfast since 2000. The addition—which can accommodate as many as 30—opened in November to cater to small weddings, corporate meetings and families looking for a private getaway. The space offers abundant natural light and a view of downtown Juneau and the Gastineau Channel.

Located in a downtown neighborhood on landscaped grounds, the Jorgenson House is within walking distance of the Alaska Capitol building, state and federal offices, hiking trails and numerous restaurants.

EVENT SPACE: 540 square feet

This isn’t your father’s Marriott. The new Seattle Marriott Bellevue, which is scheduled to open in mid-January, is the first Marriott property to open since the hotelier’s rebranding efforts. Geared toward younger travelers, the hotel offers a 200-seat restaurant and bar in the lobby to encourage socializing and networking before and after meetings, as well as a coffee-shop style lounge for members of the hotel’s rewards club. Guest rooms are inspired by residential loft apartments, with uncarpeted floors, open closets and 55-inch televisions.

Breakout meeting rooms are grouped together on one floor, just a grand-staircase descent away from the ballroom. The setup is ideal for moving people quickly and efficiently from events in the ballrooms to the smaller meeting areas, says General Manager Rob Morgan. Kitchens and administrative spaces are housed away from the meeting rooms, reducing traffic and noise.

The Seattle Marriott Bellevue is located in Bellevue’s downtown core, near the upscale Shops at The Bravern and local restaurants such as Seastar, El Gaucho, Wild Ginger and Blue Martini Lounge. The popular Meydenbauer Convention Center is a quick threeblock walk away.

EVENT SPACE: 21,000 square feet, including 17 meeting rooms and a 6,200-square-foot ballroom
GUESTS: Up to 600
ELECTRONIC CAPABILITIES: Full A/V system, high-speed Internet, broadcast capability from ballroom
AMENITIES: Breakout rooms with high ceilings, 200-seat bar/restaurant in lobby, close to Meydenbauer Convention Center and transit
