Megan Pierce was recently named the director of group sales for The Curtis Hotel.

1. What are you looking forward to the most in your new role? 

Working alongside some of the best leaders in the hospitality industry. I had the privilege of working alongside Ed Blair, Rebel Leader aka General Manager at The Curtis, in a previous role with Sage Hospitality and have never felt more motivated to be a better person both professionally as well as personally. His enthusiasm is so contagious and his leadership style is something I continue to emulate. Ed’s praise for his Ring Leader aka Director of Sales and Marketing, Lizzie Raudenbush, was one of the main reasons for pursuing this role.  I am eager to collaborate with her, learn from her and grow an amazing team of sales professionals with her guidance.
 
2. How do you think past experiences have prepared you for this role?

I have had the privilege and honor to work alongside some very strong leaders in my career that have prepared me for this step.  Not only have they helped me to dial in my skills in the sales arena, they have challenged me to recalibrate my way of thinking and continuously “sharpen my mind”. Working alongside such a strong team only helps build your skills as an individual and broaden your perspective on unconventional thinking.  
 
3. How did you get into the industry? 

Strangely enough, when I first applied to Grand Valley State, I was going for my teaching degree in early education. After my first semester I realized something was missing from my studies. I wasn’t passionate about any of my electives and knew I needed to reconsider where I was going to go. After a chat with a close friend, she said “You would be great in hospitality!”. Truthfully, I didn’t know what the hospitality industry really entailed, or furthermore what it would mean to major in the field. I quickly met with a school counselor and changed my direction for the 2nd semester. During my junior year I was presented with a wonderful opportunity to complete an internship at the Aspen Meadows Resort, in Aspen, CO. Not only was this an eye opening experience, but it solidified that I was on the right path to where my passion truly lies. Shortly after completing that internship, I was offered another opportunity at the Stanley Hotel. After completing my senior internship I was hired on full time and never looked back. I tried to leave the industry once, but to no avail, returning after only 18 months.
 
4. What are you hoping to achieve in your new role?

I am hoping to share my leadership style with an experienced team and challenge the way we view group business as a whole. Building upon what we have and casting a vision that we can work towards that will optimize our position within this market.
 
5. What do you enjoy most about the industry? 

The ever changing landscape. I thrive on a challenge and love to collaborate with a team of leaders on a new way of thinking.
