Sherry Abedi was recently hired as the general manager of Thompson D.C., opening later this year.
1. What are you looking forward to the most in your new role?
I am looking forward to launching the Thompson brand into the D.C. market and creating a memorable experience for travelers and locals alike.
2. How do you think past experiences have prepared you for this role?
I have an extensive background with openings and renovations which will be helpful with the launch, especially as it relates to human capital. I also possess the ability to assemble a team of hospitality professionals with a passion for designing one-of-a-kind experiences and making a lasting impression on our guests and community. These are critical elements to establish Thompson D.C. in the Navy Yard.
3. How did you get into the industry?
I fell into hospitality as a way to earn a living while working through school. I started in food and beverage within the hotel space, and after that I was hooked and never looked back.
4. What are you hoping to achieve in your new role?
My goal is to establish Thompson D.C. as the preeminent lifestyle hotel in our market and one of the top places to work.
5. What do you enjoy most about the industry?
What I enjoy most about the industry is that we still focus on people. With all the advances in technology, we have less and less personal interactions. However, the hospitality industry allows us the opportunity to connect with people daily and offer a genuinely personalized experience. It is truly rewarding to be in the business of making emotional and long-lasting memories.
