The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in Louisiana has a slew of innovative procedures in place to maximize sustainability

By Linden M. Bayliss

The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, which has been LEED Gold-certified since 2022, is Louisiana’s largest LEED-accredited project and the largest convention center in the U.S. sanctioned under LEED version 4.1 for operations and management.

Some of its notable efforts include:

Recycling and Composting:
The convention center has designated collection areas for cardboard, plastic, pallets, and metal. After this year’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, the convention center recycled 40 tons of polypropylene carpet used for connected events. Sodexo Live, the center’s caterer, composts kitchen waste and uses plastic-free, biodegradable silverware.

Paying it Forward:
Sodexo Live coordinates food donations to area partners, including Second Harvest Food Bank, which provides food access and disaster response to people in need. Event material donations also can be arranged via the convention center’s network of community partners.

Conserving Resources:
The convention center upgraded 4,000 exhibit hall lights to LEDs.
It also installed water-saving fixtures in restrooms and 87 bottle-filling stations. In addition, the convention center has several electric vehicle charging stations available in its
Lot F parking area.
