Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club in The LINQ Promenade in Las Vegas, Nevada, has deployed state-of-the-art technology to incorporate life-size, 4K hologram appearances by celebrities within the club. The system, from Los Angeles-based Proto, represents the world’s first holographic communications platform and patented hologram machine that makes “holoportation” a reality. Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club represents the first permanent installation of a Proto unit in Las Vegas.

Proto won four Innovation awards at the 2023 CES show in Las Vegas and subsequently has been hailed as the creator of a new form of communication by The New York Times, the BBC, and more.

With the help of Proto, comedy fans can spend quality time with Kimmel and Guillermo Rodriguez, Kimmel’s former security guard who became a celebrity of his own through Kimmel’s late-night talk show. The duo will appear in recorded hologram form to greet guests and riff on Las Vegas as patrons arrive at the club. In addition, Kimmel and other celebrities can beam in live from Los Angeles to surprise fans, interacting with them in real time. Celebrities who appear via hologram appear in a white box that looks like a cross between a futuristic telephone booth and a teleporter from Star Trek’s U.S.S. Enterprise.

“I grew up on late night TV—studying the talk show hosts seemed as important as school for me because I wanted a career in broadcasting,” says David Nussbaum, inventor and CEO of Proto. “That’s why it’s such an incredible honor to have the public see Jimmy, Guillermo and the top comics who will be beaming to Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club in the Proto Epic. We knew we had to do better than ever on this. Proto has beamed world leaders, doctors, professional athletes, and musical geniuses around the world—but it’s the comics who are most exacting. You do not want to mess with a comedian’s timing.”

Nussbaum founded Proto in 2019, and now the company has dozens of Fortune 500 clients and beams executives, heads of state, and superstar athletes and artists all over the world week after week. To date, some of the comedians who have used Proto include Kenan Thompson, Whitney Cummings, Tom Segura, Kyle Dunnigan, and Andy Kindler. Proto was also used at Jon Stewart’s Stand Up for Heroes event at Lincoln Center.

Since its mass-market debut in 2022, Proto has appeared on the TV show “America’s Got Talent,” dozens of Hollywood red carpets, and at NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL games and events. Paris Hilton, Sean Combs, William Shatner, Manny Pacquiao, Metro Boomin, Logan Paul, Ellen DeGeneres, and Lewis Hamilton have all used Proto along with companies like Walmart, Netflix, Spotify, and SeatGeek.
