Attendees flying into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona and planning to hail an Uber might select Waymo One driverless autonomous vehicles, which can now travel across a dramatically expanded area of the East Valley. Phoenix was the first city in the country to offer driverless rides to the public in October 2020, and the Phoenix airport was the first in the world to offer Waymo One in December 2022. A partnership with Uber in Phoenix began last fall, allowing Uber app users to select a Waymo One ride in the app if an autonomous vehicle is available. Driverless rides also can be hailed in the Waymo One app. The larger coverage area stretches to North Phoenix, North Scottsdale, Mesa, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community; the expanded service marks the first time autonomous vehicles can operate on tribal land. The vehicles drop off riders to the airport curbside at the terminals 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with drop-off 24 hours daily at the 24th Street and 44th Street PHX Sky Train stations—both with train access to Terminals 3 and 4.
