Railyard Park, south of Waxahachie’s central business district, received the Texas Downtown President’s Award for New Construction. The scenic green space is situated along Waxahachie Creek and offers a range of amenities and activities for the community to enjoy. The park design includes 1.2 acres at the convergence of the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad.
The Texas Downtown President’s Awards is a program that was started in 1986 and selects awards annually. The awards recognize outstanding projects, places, and people of downtowns and focuses on the revitalization, restoration, and promotion of downtown areas. Among the 12 categories for design and achievement awards are new construction, public improvement, and commercial interior. There is also an individual award granted each year to the person most involved in promoting and revitalizing a Texas downtown.
One of the main attractions of the park is its state-of-the-art amphitheater that features a large, covered stage perfect for concerts, performances, and other community events. Visitors can also take advantage of the picnic tables, sensory music garden, splash pad, bike racks, food truck parking, historic appreciation areas, and water fountain that’s designed for both people and their furry friends to enjoy.
In addition to being a fun destination, Railyard Park also serves as a convenient connection between downtown shops and restaurants, the Waxahachie Hike-and-Bike trail, and the Wags-A-Hachie dog park. This makes it a great spot for a quick break while exploring the area, or for spending an entire day enjoying all that Waxahachie has to offer.
Railyard Park is the previous recipient of the Greater Dallas Planning Council annual Urban Design Award in 2021. The Urban Design Award recognizes outstanding projects that demonstrate vision and excellence in the Dallas area.
