The Driskill Hotel, a historic property operating in downtown Austin since 1886, is embarking on a major renovation project, which commenced at the end of the summer. The updates will debut in phases, with the first focused on updating guest rooms in the 110 Tower built in 1929, launching an additional 2,800-square-foot ballroom, refreshing the fitness center, and reimagined dining concepts in partnership with Austin-based MML Hospitality. Phase 1 completed this fall. Among the culinary updates is the renewed Driskill Bar and The Driskill Grill, as well as The Victorian, a new cocktail bar and lounge.

The second phase of the project is expected to be completed by summer and will focus on updating the hotel lobby, grand staircase, and the original tower of guest rooms. It also will debut a retail space named Stark & Sisters. The entire project will be directed by Swoon the Studio, a design firm in Dallas, to center the preservation of the hotel’s history.

“The reimagining of The Driskill Hotel isn’t about a look or style, it’s about celebrating the history and embracing things that last,” says Joslyn Taylor, principal and partner at Swoon the Studio, in a prepared statement. “The Driskill will transcend fad, embracing thoughtful details, honest materials, and clever comforts that feel modern and timeless all at once.”
