The word “success” has varied meanings depending on who you ask. For Sara Heald, founder of Houston-based event-planning company Sara in the City, it means being a role model for her kids, building meaningful relationships with clients, and producing events that leave a lasting impact on attendees. “What I enjoy most is the opportunity to create experiences that genuinely make people feel something,” she says. “Events have this beautiful way of bringing communities together, celebrating milestones, and elevating a message—and I love being the person who helps bring all of that to life.”

Following a layoff in the spring of 2020, Heald opted to become a full-time stay-at-home parent for a brief time. Come fall of that year, in-person events would slowly ramp up again and provide Heald with opportunities to gain planning experience that eventually inspired her to launch Sara in the City in 2021. “As in-person events began to re-emerge, organizations were struggling to reconnect with the people who had supported their events before the industry changed so dramatically,” she says. “My very first opportunity came from a fellow mom in my neighborhood who was organizing a fundraiser for a nonprofit. I said ‘yes’ immediately—and that single ‘yes’ opened the door to many more.”

Sara in the City provides comprehensive event-planning services, from initial consultation to event design, transportation, and logistics. While the company is based in Houston, Heald produces gatherings far beyond the city. “I organize events all over the world,” she says. “One of the things I find most exciting about this industry is that it allows me to work in so many different places and create experiences that reflect each location’s personality. My background is in destination management, so weaving in a regional sense of place—the culture, flavors, and atmosphere—is something I truly love to do, no matter where the event is held.” In the five years since she launched her business, Heald has planned events throughout Texas, Florida, Georgia, Europe, and Australia.

Wherever she goes, though, Heald’s heart is always at home with her family in Houston. “Personally, this role gives me the flexibility to build a career I love while also being present for my family,” she says. “As a mother, it is important to me that my kids see me pursuing
something I am passionate about. I want them to grow up watching resilience, creativity, and leadership in action. Knowing they are seeing me build something
meaningful—something that reflects who I am—motivates me every day.”
