Frontier life still embodies the romance of wide-open spaces, untouched mountains and rivers, lone figures atop horses pushing cattle along the Chisholm Trail from the Rio Grande to Kansas, sleeping out under expansive dark skies, and cooking meals outdoors. In Texas, you can find legendary steakhouses providing a nostalgic taste of that connection to the land, telling the stories of when a day of hard labor ended with simple meals grilled over a campfire. Today, these culinary destinations carry on that legacy, and many have beautiful event spaces perfect for gatherings.
Air saturated with the aroma of grilled meats, a gravel parking lot filled with pickup trucks, and a rustic hay barn with long wooden tables spilling outside are indications you have arrived at Perini Ranch, a 640-acre James Beard Award-winning steakhouse in the town of Buffalo Gap. “Perini Ranch steakhouse is what it is because of where it is,” says Lisa Perini, co-owner of Perini Ranch. “You don’t just stumble upon it.”

Tom Perini, Lisa Perini’s husband and the other co-owner of Perini Ranch, is a former chuckwagon cook who has lived in the area since 1952, opening the humble roadside steakhouse in 1983. For over 40 years, Perini Ranch has served celebrities, presidents, and area residents alike. The couple can be spotted most nights hugging old friends and welcoming first-time diners to the ranch. The grills are loaded with USDA-Certified Angus beef steaks, which are then cooked over mesquite, a hardwood native to West Texas. Crispy, fried catfish; green chile hominy; and the signature cowboy potatoes—skin-on and roasted with garlic and butter—are just a few items on the customizable catering menu.
Century-old live oak trees, starry skies, the old-fashioned dance floors, and garlands of twinkling lights make Perini Ranch’s outdoor area great for buffet-style gatherings for up to 500 people. Inside the steakhouse, groups up to 120 can be accommodated. The Supper Club by Perini Ranch offers a private-dining venue, also in Buffalo Gap, that accommodates up to 40 guests—but no matter which location, you get the same Perini hospitality and top-notch food.

Just about three hours east in Dallas, Elisabeth Landry, owner and lead planner of Silver Lining Events + Co., often relies on Al Biernat’s for important events like the MLB’s Texas Rangers World Series championship official celebration she helped plan in 2023. “When I need a reliable, reputable venue with impeccable staff, I call Al Biernat’s,” she says. “Al’s staff thinks of the client experience from the time they turn into the parking lot. They remember your name, the story you told them the last time you were there, and, of course, your drink order. They have mastered the art of hospitality.”
Although business dinners are its specialty, Al Biernat’s offers a variety of spaces in its two locations, each with its own vibe, to accommodate parties of up to 75 people. Al Biernat’s North is near Dallas’ Inwood neighborhood and features cozy fireplaces and audiovisual hookups. The Oak Lawn neighborhood location has a garden room with an adjoining outdoor patio, perfect for socializing before a seated dinner. Regardless of the location chosen, menus can be customized to fit budget and dietary needs.
“Al Biernat’s hospitality and service stand out,” says Tina Beard, private dining manager at Al Biernat’s. “Al was a constant inspiration, instilling in each of us a commitment to excellence, a genuine love for hospitality, and a belief in the power of a shared meal.”

In Amarillo, the Big Texan Steak Ranch has been family-owned and -operated for more than 65 years. Founder R.J. Lee opened the distinctive cowboy outpost in 1960 along the iconic Route 66 (today along the access road to Interstate 40). The ranch’s 60-foot neon sign of a cowboy on horseback greets guests, and the 72-ounce steak challenge (during which participants attempt to finish the giant steak and sides in under an hour) cemented the restaurant’s legendary notoriety. It has since expanded its offerings, including two meeting rooms in the steakhouse that can comfortably fit between 70 and 80 people; the Starlight Ranch performance venue next door that accommodates up to 1,000 people; and cabins, wagons, and a motel.
San Antonio, once a gathering spot for many cattle herders starting their cattle drives, preserves the remnants of cowboy life through exhibits in the city’s Witte Museum and on the plates served at steakhouses like Dean’s Steak & Seafood inside the Kimpton Santo hotel. The restaurant’s versatile indoor and outdoor spaces accommodate up to 300 attendees in areas reminiscent of being out on the trail, surrounded by 100-year-old trees. The building itself, a historic 19th-century limestone schoolhouse, exudes early ranch life. The menu is filled with Japanese and Texas Wagyu, sushi-grade seafood, and artisanal takes on homey sides and desserts.
“In the short time the hotel has been open, we have hosted events from large corporate parties in the San Juan Grand Ballroom to intimate private dinners in the mezzanine of Dean’s Steak & Seafood,” says Chelsea Donner, assistant general manager of the restaurant. “This location bridges historic downtown and the vibrant Southtown neighborhood of San Antonio and is only a short walk from the city’s biggest attractions and entertainment venues.”

Located in downtown San Antonio, Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood hosts luxurious events for up to 130 people in its private dining rooms furnished with dark cherry wood and wainscot paneling and adorned with fresh white tablecloths. Some of the rooms have flat-screen TVs, roll-down screens, podiums, and computer connections to facilitate business meetings. Menus are customizable, but at the core are always USDA Prime-grade steak cuts cooked over mesquite hardwood. The restaurant offers classics like shrimp cocktails and wedge salads, plus specialty options like Akaushi beef, known for its exceptional marbling and buttery texture.

“For those seeking a truly memorable steakhouse experience for meetings or events in San Antonio, Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood delivers,” says Scott Becker, general manager of Bohanan’s. “With our commitment to prime beef and fresh seafood and an extensive wine list, we ensure every occasion is elegant and unforgettable. And our legacy of refined Texas hospitality continues to set the standard for excellence.”
